If they are really robots, then the most effective method I have 
found is a simple password which you reveal to human eyes. For an 
example go to:
http://neil.eton.ca/wiki/index.php/Guest/WikiSandbox

and try to edit it.

The other extremely effective tool I have found is the Blocklist2 
script using URL fragments. Almost all the wiki spam I get seems to 
be advertising drugs at particular web sites, but a few entries like 
"block:drugpusher.com" stops a ton of it.
