And I still think that is the only thing that makes sense.

For example,  (:if date 20051006 :) means display this item  for 1 
day on 2005-10-06
and (:if date 20051006-20051007:) *should* mean display it for 2 days 
staring on 2005-10-06

Having the second instance mean the same as the first looks wrong to me.
