So the function that translates-on-save would only transform (: that it
recognises as part of a directive? Don't know why, but I imagined the
save-function to transform all '(:' to '[:' etc.

But.. how would this transform function be aware of additional markup
defined by plugins? (If it doesn't transform every occurence).

That probably depends on how long lines you write... in my experience, the
lines tend to become very long when you write normal paragraphs in the
edit form. (Nothing necessarily bad about that either).

Maybe... but at least you have an easy reply to anyone complainign that [:
... :] is difficult to type. I guess a big problem with learning to use
(:...:) is that whenever you type it, it's gone after you've saved it.

Wonder what happens when you use an external editor? The buffer would keep
showing (:directive:) even after you've saved the page (unless you do a
reload). First I thought this would introduce lots of extra differences
with the version control, but I guess it wont.

Hmm... what about using a reverse transformation as well (if the user
requests it)? Before you edit the source (or it is shown), all
[:directive:] are transformed into (:directive:)?
