Yeah, I really don't like doing rewrites, but in this case I couldn't
see any good way to move forward without it.  However, this really does
represent the first significant complete rewrite of the code in its
history, and it cleans up a lot of cruft that has built up over time.
Now if I can just get tools in place to make upgrading from 0.6 easier!
