I've just released pmwiki-0.4.15, which provides a strong start towards
some good upload capabilities for PmWiki. Many thanks to those of you
who have been providing testing and feedback for this feature on the
pmichaud.com site (http://www.pmichaud.com/wiki/Experimental/Uploads).

Although I'm surprisingly pleased with the way the upload feature has
turned out thus far, I think it's still somewhat "under development".
As many of you know, I'm generally wary about file upload capabilities
because they contains some tricky security and administration concerns.
I'm not entirely comfortable with any solution I've been able to come up
with, including the one released here. However, I've decided that the
best strategy at this point will be to release "something", let others
play with it, and rapidly adapt to feedback, suggestions, and
problems that others identify with the upload script.

So, I'm expecting that there will be a number of updates in the next week
or so as people get experience with the implementation and setup, Know
up front that there may be a few false starts (including this release).
But any comments, suggestions, and criticisms that people can provide
will help it evolve and stabilize quickly.

Also, I'll note that I think there's a huge amount of flexibility
built in to the upload.php script. Documenting the configuration
possibilities just for uploads is going to be a fairly major task.
Some examples:
  * uploaded files can be organized per-group, per-page, per-site, or
according to some other administrator-defined criteria
  * maximum upload file sizes can be controlled on a per-type basis
  * administrators can specify additional verification rules or
processing to be performed before accepting or storing uploaded files
  * uploaded files can be accessed from within wiki pages in a variety of ways

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing how well this feature works. Thanks
again to everyone who is helping with PmWiki development.

Pm
