[pmwiki-users] Strange Behavior?

All of my PmWiki websites are starting to show this error code.
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' in
/home/imofazc/public_html/index.php on line 2

But when I overwrite the index.php and the pmwiki.php files everything is
OK.
Can anybody give me any clues as to what is occurring.
