I support all Ben says except...

Could you just clarify this point. If you mean one would write
something like in pmwiki markup:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Proin quis lacus in
magna vulputate imperdiet. Phasellus dapibus imperdiet neque. Donec nisi.
Suspendisse potenti. Duis in eros. Mauris convallis convallis ipsum. Duis
lectus urna, feugiat nec, adipiscing id, accumsan at, nunc. Praesent et libero.
%block class=deviant%Morbi laoreet pede a velit dapibus consequat.
Quisque non neque. Fusce mauris. Suspendisse sed dui. Duis faucibus.
Vestibulum ultrices. Nam vestibulum, eros ut dignissim lobortis, neque enim
volutpat eros, quis scelerisque magna felis ac nisl. Fusce sodales porta nisi.
To produce html:
<p class='normal'>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Proin quis lacus in
magna vulputate imperdiet. Phasellus dapibus imperdiet neque. Donec nisi.
Suspendisse potenti. Duis in eros. Mauris convallis convallis ipsum. Duis
lectus urna, feugiat nec, adipiscing id, accumsan at, nunc. Praesent et libero. </p>
<p class='deviant'>Morbi laoreet pede a velit dapibus consequat.
Quisque non neque. Fusce mauris. Suspendisse sed dui. Duis faucibus.
Vestibulum ultrices. Nam vestibulum, eros ut dignissim lobortis, neque enim
volutpat eros, quis scelerisque magna felis ac nisl. Fusce sodales porta nisi. </p>
Then I agree with this too.
OTOH, what, in your proposal, would this wiki markup produce:
* item 1
* item 2
* item 3
* item 4
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit.
