As Hagan points out -- this becomes a file exploration tool more than
a wiki authoring tool.  On that basis alone I think it says
"recipe" to me more than "core PmWiki feature".

However, we should certainly coordinate this with whatever we
choose to do for attachments.

Lastly, I think that I would tend to avoid using the page variable
syntax {$...} for file-based attributes.  Page variables are generally
associated with pages, not files or attachments.
