I'm not sure why that's better.  Either would work about the same.  It
seems like the (:options:) directive could be generalized / reused
elsewhere.

If the directive is used, would this work?

    [[#bygroup]]  (:options class=bygroup:)
    ...
    [[#bygroupend]]
