Funny you should ask, because I just swiped that markup from the Flutesong 
sandbox and tried it in mine.

With a multi-line block of text, you get radically different results with 
and with out the leading space. Without the leading space the text block 
loses the "returns" and ends up on one line. With the space, the returns 
are retained.
