Think of this kind of thing like many html editors. The editor handles only a subset and provides a way to see the things not known.  Thus if you stay within known it will almost wysiwyg .... almost.  Go outside... then it starts to break down... sorry for the typos.. phone.

My question was meant "(why) do we need/want intermediate html (or
RTF) instead of processing PmWiki markup directly by the WYSIWYG

I guess you want HTML to be able to use existing editors?

And converting to/from HTML is simpler than getting native PmWiki
support from a WYSIWIG editor?
