Thanks, your answer was helpful and makes sense.

Unfortunately, there was something else that was going on in my case
and I can no longer reproduce it.  You see, the fmt that I have been
using all along does *not* actually appear to group by groups:

fmt=#nextdates
[[#nextdates]]
* {=$:NextDate} [[{=$FullName}|{=$Titlespaced}]] {=$:NextAction}  {=$:Location}
[[#nextdatesend]]

At tis point, I can't reproduce the problem.  I thought it might have
had to do with the fact that I was specifying groups
(group=GroupOne,GroupTwo), or the fact that one of the groups was a
variable (group={$Group},GroupTwo), but nothing I try will reproduce
the problem I wrote about.  So, sorry for wasting your time, and tanks
for your reply.
