This is just a wild guess, but couldn't you prohibit commenting by 
changing this setting? Something that would never work, like:

$HandleAuth['comment'] = 'zzzz';

If this simply exposes my complete ignorance of PHP, then consider it an 
early Christmas gift of laughter!
