I'm not sure if this is what you have in mind, but you can learn by
modifying the distributed templates.

Step 1) Create a Site.LocalTemplates page in your wiki.

Step 2) Copy some templeate markup from Site.PageListTemplates to your
new LocalTemplates page.

Step 3) Experiment by modifying the template(s) you copied over.
