although one has to consider that this doesn't work with every 
browser...

Even if some things are "neat", robustness is more important IMHO. So 
any extension should be optional, and the basic functionality should 
work also with simpler browsers.

I suggest to display the sum of the hits.

every hit, maybe up to a certain limit.
