This would be nice, if someone wanted to try and come up with the code
I'd consider including it. The current protection is a very simple
process.
It would also conflict with the format data is stored in, which is
itself a directive.

There already is! Take a look at the unprotect feature. You can use
it to permit directives to be stored in specified text variables.
Or alternately, use the (:keep {$var}:) directive to restore the
directives that were disabled when you load the variable into the
page. These don't have to just be used in textarea boxes.
