PmWiki 2.1 already does this, as long as the nested bullets 
line up with the first character of the unnested bullet.  
I.e., do either

   * This is an unordered item
     # This is an ordered sub-item of the unordered item.
     # This is another sub-item
   * This is the next item.

or

   *  This is an unordered item
      # This is an ordered sub-item of the unordered item.
      # This is another sub-item
   *  This is the next item.

If the bullets don't align, it's assumed to be
preformatted text.
