I like to make one comment about the relative ease of this:

I think it is actually easier to make changes to the scripts or skins
php code, which will provide a fix or new feature to all who will update the
script/skin, than to ask admins to edit perhaps a dozen links spread
over various configuration pages. I can supply updated default config
pages, but as they may be edited by an admin my updated version will
not be picked up when an admin installs the update. I would have to rely on
advising admins and hope they will go through this process. So updating the
php code seems to me the cleaner way.

I like the greater options of customisation wiki config pages
provide, but updating them is not a trivial and easy matter, as it is
all in the hands of the wiki admins and not the script maintainer.
