I wonder if there is any metadata in Pmwiki pages that one can look at to
see which version of Pmwiki a site is running or which version of Pmwiki
that content (if the content is Pmwiki related) refers to. Are there any
community wide guidelines for this?

I think that page is for a different formulation of WikiFarms
that was designed as an external recipe for PmWiki v1.x.  It doesn't
really apply to the WikiFarms that is distributed with PmWiki.
