This seems intuitive and consistent with

* item
** sub-item
*** sub-sub-item

only...

>foo<
>>bar<<
>>>baz<<<

may perhaps be more natural

Aside from backwards compatibilty, is there a reason not
to start with >foo< rather than >>foo<< ?
