Here's how I did it for a fundraising thermometer drawn in php

http://www.mysite.org/pmwiki/scripts/thermometer.php?Current=11615&Goal=10000&Width=80&Height=500&Font=2&format=.png
Current, Goal, Width, and height are variables

"format=.png" is the piece you are looking for
