It was more my lack of clarity in the instructions...

On the form template page, we write:

:field prompt value:fieldname tool tip text ...

Your ViewTemplate needs to use <fieldname>, not <field prompt text>.

Do you also need a way to insert the field prompt text into the ViewTemplate display? For example, we might use [fieldname] to denote "replace me with the prompt text". At the moment, it's a minimalist solution to get started.
