I did not ask for z-indexed layers, because I was hopeless that there 
could be a more advanced solution.
Z-index makes my bg-image demand obsolete. Its by far more universal, 
apart from opacity-uses now.  :-)
I do target no legacy browsers....

Now I am by far more interested in the cross-browser compatibility of 
layers!
In FF it works exactly how it should work, apart from the left over      
'>      tag. FF displays it, because it seemes more forgiving, stripping 
this by manually, IE is working as well. Opera seems to need even more.

I am exited as you, which opened it tremendously for our creativity.
