Thanks for the rapid response. 

That website (www.wqmag.com) seemingly uses the '|' character 
in every search, and hence in every link, for example:

This link is a search output, so does not actually 
work, but it indicates the '|' character:

http://www.wqpmag.com/wqp/index.cfm?powergrid=rfah=|cfap=&CFID=71165&CFTOKEN
=11830517&fuseaction=showQuickSearchResults 

Although rare, perhaps a note in the Pmwiki 2.0 
documentation? For example:

Occasionally you may discover some external website URL's 
use characters that don't entirely comply with the RFC 2396 
specification. These URL's, when rendered in PmWiki, are 
usable. For example, URL's that contain the '|' character 
need to be manually edited replacing '|' with '%7c'. For a 
full list of approved characters refer to xxlinkxx
