...rather than CSS classes?  For example,  rather than defining %audience%
and then converting each usage of that markup to "font-size: smaller;
background-color: rgb(255, 255, 204)",  why not stick it in a CSS class at
the top of the file and use that?

It's not a big deal,  I was just poking around in the markup processing
and got curious.
