Ok. Mabye it could be generalized then... or maybe mode would simply be a 
special case of a configuration.


Here's a perhaps wild idea for the author mode... what if you got an edit 
form at the bottom of each page you view?  

It's sounds kind of crazy at first, but it'd definitely make it quick to 
edit the page. You could either remove the edit link in this case, or 
simply make it a link to an anchor just in front of the edit form.

It'd be like working in a preview mode, except that changes are actually
saved if you press saved (unless you'd use the preview button).
