The Instiki Wiki has a very nice presentation for markup. When you edit a 
page, the common markups appear to the right of the edit window in a 
2-column format:
         markup example   --->   what it looks like

and there is a link to "advanced" Textile markup which pops open a new 
window with a long list of examples in the same 2-column format.

This seems to be a very compact and visual way of showing both the markup 
and its effect. The new window popup does not fill the screen and leaves 
the page being edited intact and visible
