[Pmwiki-users] free text markup

As a new user I was hardly aware of the [++..++] syntax. But its existence
makes the '' and ''' convention for emphasis and strong even more
remarkable, though having a light appearance rendered in a variable font.
One might have expected ** and perhaps // to bound these.

But as I have problems remembering a particular syntax I would perhaps
prefer to use brackets always. So [*bold*] and [/italics/] would have my
preference, regardless of creating a rather unnatural and complicated
appearance of the source-text.

Others would prefer to go the other way: **bold**, //italics//,
@@monospaced@@, __underlined__, --smaller-- and +++much larger+++.
Optionally combining them with brackets to throw in some [=protection=],
f.e. [**bold and no WikiWords**], or even [*BoldSyntax*].

Such considerations I think should not be an issue dominating the list.
Pmwiki might contain a page on which the administrator selects the markups
to activate, and it would generate a markup.php file to be included in the
config.php, perhaps even specific to a group. I may even get to this.

PmWiki would of course ship with the pmwiki syntax enabled, which could also
serve as an interchange-format in a wiki-farm.
