I installed X-chat and so far the applet works:
I downloaded the .jar and .cab files from pjirc (I took a look in the 
script, which file are used).

in the script I had to redefine
//$Local_PubDirUrl  = $HTTP_SERVER_VARS['HTTP_HOST'];
//$CodeBase         = $Local_PubDirUrl . '/pub/x-chat';  /* was not 
correct */

$CodeBase         = $PubDirUrl.'/x-chat';  /* $PubDirUrl is defined by 
pmwiki, works so  */

connection now is ok, but the buttons show "undefined string". May be I 
have to copy a few more files:-)
