[Pmwiki-users] ChangePmWikiURL / mod_rewrite

Just a note to PmWiki users in general--

A lot of configuration issues have come across
the listserv lately that come down to problems with
the mod_rewrite modification suggested by
http://www.pmichaud.com/wiki/PmWiki/ChangePmWikiURL .

First, some background: PmWiki has never been fully
tested with the mod_rewrite feature, and I wasn't the
one who wrote that particular section of the page--it
was contributed by someone else.

In order to make initial installation of PmWiki simpler,
pmwiki.php makes some pretty good guesses about the
location of the pub/ and uploads/ directories based
on the URL used to access the pmwiki.php script. However,
if the URL that is used to access pmwiki.php changes
(e.g., by using something like mod_rewrite), then PmWiki
loses its ability to do this automatic detection and
the relevant variables have to be explicitly set in
config.php.

So, I'm trying to figure out how to resolve the current
set of problems. My ideas thus far are:

1. Move the information in ChangePmWikiURL into one
or more Cookbook pages where the configuration details
can be more easily specified.

2. Leave the information in the PmWiki documentation
but have a more thorough testing and documentation of
all of the configuration variables that must be changed/set
in order for this customization to work.

Any comments, ideas, suggestions?

Pm
