The problem with using Smarty or one of the other generalized PHP
templating systems is that they are, well, generalized. PmWiki requires a
very limited number of layout types. A generalized templating system would
add a lot of overhead and complexity to setting up and running PmWiki.
That's not to take anything away from Smarty, which is very good at what
it does, but rather to say that I think it's a container ship where PmWiki
needs a row boat.
