Please keep in mind that this should not only be used for
signatures, but everywhere a user name could be listed. E.g.:

	        as a signature -- ~username
	        ~username: chat-style message
	        ~username said foobar

PS: Wasn't --some text-- used for strikethrough somewhere?

and I think that's a good reason why ~username (or is
better.

In addition, we have the UNIX convention in paths that:

	~username

refers to the home directory of the user 'username'. And very often you'll
find that your personal webpage are located at

	http://<partial-uri>/~username

Actually, the URI to my homepages is an example of this:

	http://www.md.kth.se/~chr

Finally, I think these examples also illustrate why it makes more sense to
use instead of {~username~} or other "symmetric" alternatives.

PS. I just came up with a reason why is better than ~chr. If
I want to make a link to my profile page, but have a different link text,
I can do it like this (using the two alternatives):

      a) Christian's profile
      b) [[~christian ridderstr?m Christian's profile]]

where we can note that (a) is consistent with previous markup and (b) is
not.
