I suppose it's also worth reminding ourselves that .htaccess only
does anything useful for those sites that are actually running Apache,
or something that uses .htaccess files. For example, these files don't
do anything for IIS.
My purpose here is not to try to solve this issue for all environments
and configurations -- given the state of web server software that's
an impossible dream at the moment. Instead, I want to get it so that
PmWiki "just works" by default in the majority of cases, and have
sufficient pointers/instructions/diagnostics for the cases where it
doesn't "just work". And all of this has to be done in a way that
doesn't frighten off potential new administrators.
