One analogy I heard is that a word processor is like a house truck
(mobile home). It's as if the world evolved from tents that we
carried around on our horses to bigger and bigger and fancier and
fancier house trucks. And nobody ever had the idea that maybe we
might like a house to live in and a truck to travel in. And
because about 99% of the world lives in house trucks it seems
really weird that there are these funny people who sleep in one
box and ride around in another. The dangerous subversives who
live in houses and drive cars thing the giant Airstream trucks
that clog the roads are a bit ridiculous.

I believe that there are some countries where the average
fuel economy of the nation's car fleet is now lower than
it was in the days of the Model T Ford. So one may predict
with some confidence that in 50 years' time word processors
will be even bigger with even more features and we will be
even less productive.
