Just for closure...
I had to place the "AcceptPathInfo On" directive in /etc/httpd/conf.d/php.conf
(inside the <Files ... </Files> element). It simply did not work using the
.htaccess file method.
maybe this is an apache 2.0 'enhancement'?
anyway, thanks for the help.
