The fine print is the PMWiki engine/foundation is only part of what
makes it so effective of a web management tool. A lot of what really
makes PMWiki rock are the numerous extensions that others have provided
to cookbooks and skins. Adding these to the pmwiki core is easy
enough. They are also subject to updates and modest changes, but in
general are very solid performers. <br>

Perhaps the most significant item on the pmwiki wish list for many is
blog support. Yes, blog support is supposedly coming, supposedly. <br>
<br>
A simple workaround would seem to be to install a separate blog
somewhere (there are plenty of decent open source blogs out there to
choose from) and provide a portal page to that from with-in your wiki.
A simple (:includeurl <a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://mysite/myblog">http://mysite/myblog</a> :) in the first line of a
wiki page creates the portal. When the pmblog comes available, if you
wish to use it for the sake of consistency across your wiki, you'll
probably have to orphan the original blog, but that transition
typically passes soon enough. <br>

Similar portal workarounds are also possible for many other web
applications -- online stores, galleries, and data base handling can
all be handled in a portal. Some of these apps are also available, or
in some reasonable stage of development, within the pmwiki community,
but it's not necessary to wait to have them part of your web site. <br>
<br>
Finally, either as part of pmwiki, or separate apps viewed thru
portals in your wiki, these sorts of applications typically require
some additional admin support to fine tune and manage operations.
Expectations that this sort of additional admin support will be
significantly minimized when these apps are available as pmwiki
cookbook app are probably misguided. The (modest) work for admins is
likely only to shift locations... <br>

Don't know Pm's release schedule but I will say PmWiki is extremely
easy to upgrade, and almost always painless. If it were me I'd go
ahead and start taking advantage of the new features now. Even if 18
cam out tomorrow, it's probably a 5 minute job to get it upgraded.
That's one huge reason I switched to PmWiki!
