I discovered $MarkupFrameBase['posteval'], and it meets one of my needs nicely.

I have one question about it:  why does it use eval('text') instead of
calling a function?  My (admittedly less-than perfectly knowledgeable
about php) thought is that eval() is much more likely to pose a
security problem, and there doesn't seem to be any reason to prefer it
over a function.
