Hi Petko,

You rock! Your suggestions were very helpful.

Adding  $EnableRelativePageVars = 1;  to my config.php corrected the  
issues I was experiencing when using {$Variable}. The simplified  
option you shared is much easier for editors to deal with and I was  
able to get this to work easily.
