Are you using PmWiki version 2.2.0 (beta)?  PageTextVariables
weren't introduced until 2.2.0 .

(Yes, I know we need to take 2.2.0 out of beta.  I just need to
find a day or so to update some documentation.  Maybe I can carve
out a day today.)
