Real Academics use LaTeX. 8-)
 
Best and prettiest output for printing.  Doesn't crash like M$-Word.

If you want more WYSIWG-like, then use LyX (http://www.lyx.org)

On the other hand, if one is doing *collaborative* work, then a Wiki
does have advantages.
