I realised from the list discussion that I made a mistake here, and
have now changed the date and strftime substitution syntax to

{$$(date ....)}   and   {$$(strftime ....)}

This should hopefully be future proof.
I did keep the 'date' for php date function and 'strftime' for php
strftime function.

Sorry for changing this twice. But then better on the same day than
later.
