They haven't been useless; I just haven't had a good chance to figure
out why simpleform was having trouble with 2.2.0-beta.  However,
I think I know what the problem is now, so I may have it fixed
for 2.2.0-beta8.

This is indeed a very nice solution.  It also has the advantage
of allowing easier customization of the forum output.
