I'm not a tech person, but I was able to install apache and php on my
home XP system very easily. You might consider that option. They
both have very easy windows installers, and I have never had a lick of
trouble with either.

I did try the standalone server but didn't find it very satisfying, as
it seems to be quite limited, and quite slow.

Something slightly easier than apache and php is the joomla standalone
server (jsas). You can try googling it. But it works fine. The only
thing is you have to manually start it up, and you have to remember to
use something like localhost:85. Otherwise it's a nice solution. I
have it up at my office running fine. There are also other
apache/php/msql combo's out there you could look at. But JSAS is
designed for folks like us. And I know it works with PmWiki

As for your specific problem, if you have your webserver and php going
properly you should type something like the following into your
browser to get to open it up.

http://localhost/path/to/pmwiki.php

Be sure to insert the right path of course. Also, be sure to set the
path relative to whatever directory your webserver stores your web
files. On apache it's a folder called htdocs . In joomla its www I
think. In webabyss it may be something different still. Hope this
helps.

Some of the more IT kind of folks on the list can surely help you more.

Cheers,
Caveman
