The farm's pub/ directory is accessible by URL. It has to be for the 
skin files. So you could have:

http://farm.example.com/pmwiki/pub/images/photo.jpg

on any page. If you plan to have a lot of these, you could create an 
Intermap entry like this:

Photos: http://farm.example.com/pmwiki/pub/images/

And then you could replace that long URL with:
Photos:photo.jpg
