My goal is not so much opacity, but the display of a PNG image with a full
8-bit alpha channel (i.e. variable opacity/transparency).  As far as I can
tell IE for Windows (prior to v7) does not display 8-bit alpha, only 1-bit
simple mask ala gif files.  However, the technique I described in my
previous post does allow IE (5.5 and greater) to display such images
correctly.  Why MS never put that capability directly into the <img> tag I
don't know.
