I ofen use passwords with $ and very often I couldn't  trust my eyes...

Be carefull when assigning a pw with htpasswd,
as some special chars have to be quoted.

I used it in a script
htpasswd -b $pwfile $1 $2

(the $ has to be quoted :-)
