Part of the reason I chose >>div<< was because it would be a
convenient lever into nested divs, as in

   >>div<<

   >>>nested div<<<

   >>>nested div<<<

   >>outer div<<

   >><<

It's also more visually appealing; I'm not sure that (%foo%)
or (%color=blue%) would've worked as well.

Oh well, hindsight, etc.
