i accomplished my purpose (putting a marked up section of the page in a 
special part of the skin) by invoking MarkupToHTML() myself in an early 
markup handler.  thanks for making MarkupToHTML() recursive Patrick!

fwiw, i can imagine a few other useful tricks that could be done more 
cleanly if there were a join markup.  (iirc, this is being done at the 
end of MarkupToHTML anyway.)
