well, i guess great minds think alike.  or is it, fools seldom differ?
i always get those two confused.

i *do* note that what i proposed seems to differ significantly from at
least a couple of your proposals.  mine doesn't involve either metrics
or any notion of a "parent" specifier like "..".  and, most
importantly as i see it, if someone is happy with single-level groups,
it doesn't require *any* changes in the way they author.  i think it's
that last point that is the most critical -- being absolutely backward
compatible.
