Sure, it's doable.  Did you take a look at
http://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/Cookbook/HorizontalMenu ?
It still has a couple of bugs in it but we could
see about fixing it up (it's on my ToDo list but
way down in priority at the moment), or using some 
other source for creating such menus.
